What Is a Delaware CCDW License?
Delaware’s License to Carry a Concealed Deadly Weapon is issued through the Delaware Superior Court under 11 Del. C. §1441. Firearms training is an important part of the initial licensing process, but training by itself does not issue the license.
Superior Court License
Delaware CCDW licenses are issued through the Superior Court, not by Coastal Training Group or Coastal Firearms.
County-Based Application
Delaware residents file their initial application with the Prothonotary in the county where they reside.
Training Required
Before an initial license can be issued, the applicant must submit satisfactory documentation of qualifying firearms training.

Delaware law specifies minimum elements that must be included in the firearms course used for an initial CCDW application. Our course is structured around those requirements.

Live-Fire Training Is Required
Delaware’s statutory CCDW training requirements include live-fire exercises conducted on a range with a minimum expenditure of 100 rounds of ammunition.
Safe Handling
Students reinforce muzzle discipline, trigger discipline, loading, unloading, and responsible firearm handling.
Shooting Fundamentals
Range exercises reinforce grip, stance, sight use, trigger control, firearm operation, and safe shooting.
Continued Practice
Students are introduced to ways to continue building and maintaining skills after completing the licensing course.
The Delaware CCDW Application Process
The firearms course is only one component of the initial Delaware CCDW process. Applicants must satisfy the current Superior Court application requirements.
Review Current Instructions
Obtain the current new-application instructions and forms from the Delaware Superior Court before beginning the process.
Obtain Five References
Initial applicants provide references from five respectable citizens of the Delaware county in which the applicant resides.
Complete Fingerprinting
Current Superior Court instructions require fingerprints to be taken through the designated process within the required time period before filing.
Complete Application Materials
Prepare the application, photographs, references, filing fee, and other documents required by the Superior Court.
File With Your County
Submit the application to the Prothonotary’s Office for the county in which you reside.
Court Review
The application is reviewed through the Superior Court process. The Attorney General’s Office may also investigate the application.
When should I take the gun course? Delaware’s current process allows applicants to submit qualifying training documentation with the application. Current Superior Court instructions also provide a process for an approved applicant who has not yet submitted a gun-course certificate to complete an approved course afterward. If using that route, follow the Court’s current deadline and documentation requirements.

Completing the Course Does Not Issue a CCDW License
Coastal Training Group provides firearms training. Licensing decisions are made through the Delaware Superior Court.
Training Certificate
Successful completion provides the applicable firearms training documentation for the licensing process.
Application Review
Applicants must independently satisfy the Court’s application, reference, fingerprinting, background, and procedural requirements.
Court Decision
Completion of firearms training does not guarantee approval or issuance of a Delaware CCDW license.

Does this course give me a Delaware concealed carry license?
No. The course provides the qualifying firearms training associated with the application process. Delaware CCDW licenses are issued through the Superior Court.
Is live fire required?
Yes. Delaware law requires live-fire range exercises including the expenditure of a minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition as part of the qualifying firearms course.
Do I need five references?
Initial Delaware resident applicants are required to provide five qualifying references from residents of the county in which the applicant resides. Review the current Superior Court instructions for the complete reference requirements.
Are fingerprints required?
Yes. Current Superior Court instructions require fingerprinting for a new application. Follow the Court’s current instructions concerning the provider, service code, and timing.
Must I finish the gun course before filing my application?
Not necessarily. Applicants may submit qualifying course documentation as part of the process, but current Superior Court instructions also provide a post-approval course procedure for applicants who have not already filed a certificate. Follow the Court’s current instructions carefully because deadlines apply.
What if I also need Delaware Permit-to-Purchase training?
The combined Delaware Permit to Purchase + CCDW course may be the better choice because it is designed to address both training paths and provides separate documentation upon successful completion.
Does a Delaware CCDW affect Permit-to-Purchase requirements?
A valid Delaware CCDW is an important exemption under the state’s handgun Permit-to-Purchase law. Students should verify their current status and applicable requirements before registering for unnecessary duplicate training.
